Client Success Story: Builder wins more Jobs Without Dropping Prices

  • Mar 18
  • 2 min read

When this builder came to me midway through last year, he was in a position many tradespeople find themselves in…

Busy. Stressed. And not earning what he should have been for the work he was doing.

On the surface, things looked “fine” — plenty of work coming in — but underneath, there was a big problem:

He was constantly competing on price just to win jobs.

The Challenge

After digging into his business, two key issues stood out:

1) He was targeting the wrong marketHe was going after anyone and everyone — mostly at the lower end of the market. Naturally, this meant high competition, and in that space, price becomes the deciding factor.

2) He was underrepresenting his value

  • No branded clothing

  • A tired-looking van

  • Basic quotes sent via email

  • No follow-up process

In short, nothing about his presentation reflected the quality of his work.

So what happened?

👉 He only won jobs when he was the cheapest.

The Reality: Customers Don’t Buy on Price

Here’s the key shift we worked on:

Customers don’t buy based on price — they buy based on value.

People will happily pay more when they feel confident in what they’re getting.

But this builder wasn’t showing his value.

He wasn’t explaining his pricing.He wasn’t positioning himself as a professional.He wasn’t

giving clients a reason to choose him beyond cost.

The Strategy

We didn’t tell him to slash prices or work harder.

Instead, we focused on increasing perceived value — often without increasing cost.

Here’s what we changed:

  • ✅ Improved his overall presentation (appearance, branding, professionalism)

  • ✅ Upgraded how he delivered quotes — clearer, more detailed, and more professional

  • ✅ Introduced a follow-up process to build trust and win more jobs

  • ✅ Helped him confidently explain his pricing and the quality behind it

  • ✅ Repositioned his business to target a slightly higher-end market

  • ✅ Updated his website images to reflect the type of work and clients he actually wanted

The Result

The transformation has been huge.

  • He’s winning a higher percentage of his quotes

  • He’s working with better clients

  • And importantly…

  • His prices have increased — and people are still saying yes

The Takeaway

If you’re constantly being beaten on price, it’s not always because you’re too expensive.

More often than not…

👉 You’re just not showing enough value.

When you position yourself correctly, present professionally, and communicate clearly, price becomes far less important.
