How Focusing on What Might Go Wrong Is Holding You Back

Most people don’t fail because they lack ability.

They fail because they never start.

Not because they don’t have opportunities.

Not because they’re not capable.

But because they spend too much time focusing on what might go wrong.

And that thinking quietly limits their growth.

The Skydive That Explains Everything

When I did this skydive, I had a choice.

Standing at the edge of the plane, thousands of feet in the air, I could have focused on all the risks:

  • What if the parachute doesn’t open?

  • What if something goes wrong?

  • What if this is a terrible decision?

All of those thoughts are valid. They’re real. And they’re powerful.

But if I had allowed those thoughts to take over… I wouldn’t have jumped.

Instead, I chose to focus on a different outcome.

I allowed myself to believe:

  • The equipment would work

  • The instructor knew what they were doing

  • I’d land safely

  • It would be an incredible experience

And because of that… I jumped.

The Real Problem: Negative Outcome Bias

This is what most people do in everyday life.

They run mental scenarios—but only the negative ones.

Before they start a business:

“What if it fails?”

Before going for a promotion:

“What if I get rejected?”

Before investing money:

“What if I lose it?”

Before putting themselves out there:

“What if people judge me?”

So they don’t act.

Not because success isn’t possible…

But because they’ve already convinced themselves of failure before they’ve even started.

What If You Flipped the Question?

What if, instead of asking “What if it goes wrong?” you asked:

“What if it goes right?”

What if:

  • The business works and changes your life?

  • You get the promotion and step into a new level of confidence?

  • The investment pays off and creates financial freedom?

  • Taking the risk opens doors you can’t even see yet?

Most people never explore these possibilities because fear feels more real than potential.

But both are imagined.

You Don’t Need Certainty to Move Forward

Here’s the truth:

You will never have 100% certainty.

If I had waited for absolute certainty before jumping out of that plane, I’d still be standing there now.

Growth doesn’t come from certainty.It

comes from action despite uncertainty.

Confidence isn’t something you wait for.

It’s something you build by doing the very thing you’re unsure about.

The Cost of Staying Where You Are

There’s a hidden cost to playing it safe.

Every time you choose not to act because of fear:

  • You delay your progress

  • You reinforce self-doubt

  • You miss opportunities that could change everything

And over time, that becomes your comfort zone.

Not because it’s where you thrive…

But because it’s where you feel “safe enough.”

A Better Way to Think

This isn’t about ignoring risk or being reckless.

It’s about balance.

Instead of only asking what could go wrong, train yourself to also consider what could go right.

Because the direction of your thinking shapes the direction of your actions.

And your actions shape your results.

A Simple Challenge

Take a moment and ask yourself:

What would I do if I truly believed it would have a positive outcome?

Would you:

  • Start that business?

  • Go for that promotion?

  • Have that conversation?

  • Invest in yourself?

Now ask a second question:

What’s stopping me from taking one small step toward that today?

Final Thought

You don’t need to eliminate fear to move forward.

You just need to stop letting it be the only voice you listen to.

Because just like that skydive…

the outcome you focus on will often determine whether you ever take the leap.
