How Strong (mentally and physically) Are You, Really?

“If you don’t challenge yourself and step outside your comfort zone, how will you ever realise your own potential?”

That question has been at the centre of my life for years.
I used to say to my dad that I wanted to find my limit — mentally and physically. I wanted to know where the breaking point was. Where the line existed between “I can’t” and “I absolutely can’t.”
But no matter how hard I pushed… I never seemed to reach it.
Chasing the Edge
I remember watching a video of a woman crawling across the finish line of an Ironman. Completely spent. Nothing left. Every ounce of her energy poured out onto that course.

I turned to my dad and said, “I want to feel like that. That must feel like a real achievement.”
So I signed up for an Ironman.

For 6–8 months, I trained relentlessly. 4am starts. Long days. Early mornings in the pool, hours on the bike, running when most people were still asleep.
And then came race day.
3.8km swim.112-mile bike ride.A full marathon to finish.
I expected to be broken.
But I wasn’t.
I ran across the finish line… and felt nothing.
No collapse. No crawling. No “this is my absolute limit” moment.
Just… more in the tank.
So I Pushed Further

I thought maybe that wasn’t enough.
So I kept going.
I swam the channel.
I ran more marathons.
I trained harder.
Longer.
Earlier.
And still — nothing truly broke me.
Not the races. Not the training.
And that’s when something started to shift in my thinking.
It’s Not Just Physical
Life has its own way of testing you too.
I’ve been through a divorce.
I lost my dad 7 years ago.
Moments that, on paper, should shake you to your core.
And yes — I felt emotion. Of course I did.
But I also found something else.
Perspective. Understanding. Acceptance.
Instead of being consumed by those moments, I processed them. I understood what had happened and why. And I moved forward.
Not because it was easy… but because I chose to.
The Truth About Your Limits
There’s a concept from David Goggins called the 40% rule.
The idea is simple:
When your mind tells you that you’re done…you’re probably only at 40% of what you’re actually capable of.
Let that sink in.
Most people stop — not because they’ve reached their limit — but because they’ve reached their perceived limit.
Discomfort feels like danger.
Fatigue feels like failure.
Resistance feels like a sign to quit.
But it’s not.
It’s a sign that you’re getting closer to something most people never reach.
Why This Matters
Because if you never challenge yourself… you’ll never know.
If you stay in your comfort zone, you don’t just stay safe — you stay small.
You never discover:
How resilient you really are
How much you can actually endure
What you’re capable of achieving when things get tough
And here’s the reality:
You are far stronger than you think.
Not just physically — but mentally.
So Ask Yourself…
When was the last time you truly pushed yourself?
Not just a little bit uncomfortable…but properly challenged.
The kind of challenge where your mind starts telling you to stop.
Because that’s the moment that matters.
That’s where growth lives. That’s where confidence is built. That’s where potential is realised.
Final Thought
I set out to find my limit.
And what I found instead… is that it’s much further away than I ever imagined.
Maybe the limit isn’t something you find.
Maybe it’s something you keep moving.
